Bethlehem Serves

This is an annual event in which Sunday morning worshipers put God's Word into action by carrying out multiple service projects for the larger community.

Bethlehem Serves 2011 - God's Work, Our Hands

  • Thanks to the North San Diego County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for providing partial funding to buy project materials

On Campus Projects

School Bag Preparation - stuff school bags with supplies for needy children in our community. We assembled 105 school kits, had about 18 participants, and already have a head start on supplies for next year.

Toiletry Kits for T.A.C.O. - Assemble toiletry kits for the Third Avenue Charitable Organization. 158 toiletry kits were put together. This year we have many more leftover items to contribute to TACO for their own assembly of toiletry paks.  Each pak contains 5 basics plus a miscellaneous item. We have many more bags of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, razors, shampoo, lotion, etc. to contribute that they will combine with other donations to assemble toiletry paks at TACO. I'm so pleased and very touched with the most generous outpouring of donations from our Bethlehemians, as they call us!

Pajama Project - join this award-winning project for a morning of cutting flannel and assembling pajama kits. Experience cutting out patterns would be especially welcomed but there will be activities for the enitre family to participate. 21 people helped to create 64 pajama kits.

Prayer Shawl Ministry - join this special ministry for a morning of knitting/crocheting and fellowship (not recommended for children under 10). Prayer Shawl Ministry had 6 people not including previous members. We taught 2 young girls how to knit and recruited 3 new members for the ministry.

Meals with Love - prepare hot meals for delivery to local shut-ins and others in need of a lovingly prepared meal (not recommended for children under 10).

Bicycle Repair/Refurbishment for CRC - the Community Resource Center will provide children's bicycles that need cleaning and repair or refurbishment. The CRC will provide spare parts and an electric pump for tire inflation. Tools will be available. Have your own tools? Bring them along. This is a good project for the entire family. We had 18 to 20 volunteers and recieved 60 kids bikes to work on.  About 45 were repaired and cleaned and ready to go.  About 5 needed parts and further work and the remaining 10 were either DOA (i.e. any bike with cables that has spent more than a month stored outdoors in SD needs a complete recableing, which is beyond the scope of any but the most advanced home bike repair person) or we just didn't have people to get to them. Cudos go to all our volunteers but I want to make special mention of our youth, Peter Reynolds and Eric Lawver.  Peter took control of the final cleaning, lubing and polishing station and did a great job directing a crew of energetic boys.  Eric directed loading the truck. Bob Lund and Geoff Doyle had some great insights for our next bike repair foray. Along with Eric, Geoff and Bob; the Ensberg boys (all 3) hung in until the bitter end and the tailgate was rolled down! Thanks again to all! In Christ (and grease!)

Hand chime / Singing Serenade of Seniors - spend an hour with our music director, Mona Goetsch, as you learn to sing along with hand chimes. You will then travel to a local senior center to serenade the residents.

Potted Plants for Bethlehem Neighbors - this project if for the children. Kim Oswald will be in Dot's Garden where the children will put plants and flowers in to decorated pots. These potted plants will then be delivered to our immediate neighbors. 14 participants made and handed out 40 potted plants to our neighbors.

Food Sorting for CRC - the Community Resource Center will have a truck containing food items that were donated during the recent U.S. Postal Service food drive. The food items will be taken off of the truck, sorted, and put back into the truck. A great project for the whole family.

 Off Campus Projects

Food Collection for U.S. Marines - you will help collect food items at a local grocery store. Food items will be donated to the U.S. Marines.

Painting of CRC - you will be painting outside walls of the Community Resource Center.

San Elijo Lagoon Restoration - working outside to help with lagoon restoration. Must be 13 or older. Must wear closed toe shoes. Suggested to bring work gloves, hat, and sunscreen. Water will be provided. 15 volunteers max. The San Elijo Lagoon Project was very successful. Thank you to the many volunteers (17) for their hard labor. They shoveled  wheelbarrowed and raked crushed rock and sand to repair the beautiful trail at the lagoon. The county employees worked alongside and provided shovels, rakes and first aide supplies. Thank you to Joel Kramer and the Habitat Management Program at San Elijo Lagoon for organizing this event.

Ocean Knoll Elementary - work with our local elementary school to help create a butterfly habitat. Some landscape work and planting will be done. About 20 people helped out with this project. A big ovation to Stu Simm who really created the whole habitat, from designing the garden, buying materials and then working throughout the day to make sure the design was fulfilled. He finished watering the plants and washing down the hallway at 2:45!   Many helped with the digging of plants, repotting them, digging holes for the fence, sawing, mixing cement, planting new flowering plants. Then there are those who worked very hard cleaning paths, pulling out picket fences, pulling weeds, raking and shoveling. IT WAS A FABULOUS COMMUNITY PROJECT!  It would not have been successful without each and every one of YOU.

San Dieguito Academy - construct garden planter boxes for the student-run Mustang Center. Wear closed toe shoes. Bring hats, gloves, sunscreen and water. Bring your hammer or battery-powered hand drill. Five people helped build planter boxes at SDA. Thank you all for the time you put into building the garden beds.  I will send out invitations to our grand opening event that should be taking place in October. Oly Norris, SDA teacher.

Neighbor Assist - do you know of a church member or do you have a neighbor that needs a little help? Let us know and we will see if we can provide assistance.
