QUILTS

Bethlehem Women’s “Scraps & Prayers” quilters participate in Lutheran World Relief’s (LWR) Project Comfort.  Every Wednesday morning we meet in the Multi-Use Room at Bethlehem Lutheran Church to lay out and “tie” quilts for Lutheran World Relief and the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton as well as prayer quilts. We also make baby quilts from the left over flannel from the PJ project and we make school bags for distribution through LWR and through local organizations.  (Everyone is welcome to join in ‘as able.’)

A LWR quilt is special!!  It brings warmth on a cold night and shelter from the sun on a hot day.  It becomes a bed, a room divider, a backpack to carry belongings, and at times even a home.  Each quilt is one of a kind, with a beauty all its own, made as a gift of hope by caring people.

In 2008 LWR distributed over 455,000 quilts to their ‘overseas partners.’ The cost for shipping the quilts in 2009 is $2.25 per quilt (an increase of 25 cents over 2008 costs).  Each fall our Bethlehem Lutheran Church unit displays the quilts in church.  Donations are accepted for the quilts to help defray the shipping expenses LWR incurs.

In 2009 the quilters at Bethlehem Lutheran Church made 54 large quilts, 37 baby quilts, 10 swaddling blankets and sewed 74 school bags and filled them with school supplies.  We sent 15 quilts to LWR for distribution, raised $1500 to help defray shipping costs incurred by LWR through the donations for the quilts mentioned above, took 11 quilts to the Wounded Warrior Battalion, gave 8 Prayer quilts to church members, donated 11 PJ/baby quilt sets to raise funds for the PJ project, and gave 37 baby quilts  to Military Outreach Ministries at Camp Pendleton .

Scraps & Prayers also participates in Bethlehem’s Fall Harvest Festival and Christmas Bazaar and offers ‘special’ quilts and ‘special baby quilts and pajamas sets’ available for donations to support the various programs supported by the Bethlehem Women of the ELCA.

LWR Who got Quilts in 2009?

Below are the "Quilts for Project Comfort Fund" as well as quilts donated to the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton which were sewn by the Scraps and Prayers group. These quilts, for 2009, are being donated to a wide variety of caring humanitarian services.
